Question for my friends in Japan...

Ok- so what is going on with that reactor? I see on AP and other US news that a whole crew aboard a ship has been exposed to radiation but according to NHK this morning there were several people exposed but not more than your average x-ray.

What are you guys hearing over there??

US news tends to sensationalize everything so I am not trusting what I am seeing on the tube.

that the latest blowup only caused radiation equivalent to taking an x-ray. they are cooling it down using sea water but there is still possibility things could get worse. it seems they are doing everything they can and that 'being exposed' to the amounts that are coming out wont leave anyone growing another head or a tail. Very small amounts and they still only have people evacuated from within a 20 or 30 km radius.

Thinking about you. The Times newspaper says the Japanese PM says its the worst crisis since 1945. Its definitely bad but there are some stories of survival in extreme times. They are certainly struggling to keep the power stations from further problems re nuclear fall out etc. The next few days are certainly critical. The whole world is watching. Good luck.

We are watching BBC and CNN- our media also has plenty of reports- the threat looms large and after shocks etc.

Anxiety is high, we're all really worried, but leadership here at the base continue to tells us not to worry, that no matter what happens, the radiation won't ever reach harmful levels. But experts have been wrong before, and my kids health/lives are on the line, so I'm going pretty crazy right now!

The Medical Group here on base tests the air for radiation twice a day and have reported "no abnormal levels" of radiation. But the groups at the bases in Yokosuka and Atsugi have detected low, but not harmful, levels in the air.

BUT, all this is happening in central and northern Japan. Further south, everything seems to be okay. Up this way, they're rationing gas, and there are water and food shortages, but again, further south, things are normal.

We're supposed to have rolling black outs to help conserve energy, but so far they haven't happened. Both of the last two outages scheduled for our region have been cancelled at the last minute......

I know quite a few people with young kids that are leaving the country over the next few days (all foreigners). *Sigh* It's a tough call. I want to trust that the the experts know what they're talking about and that the government(s) will do what's best for us. But what if they're wrong? Such a huge gamble.
